Running a Non-Profit Organization

One of the challenges of running a non-profit organization is finding the right people to get things done.  Another is to avoid ‘burning them out’ by overtaxing them.  Too often, groups run on the backs of just a handful of volunteers.  This creates a lack of new ideas, a lack of new blood and a lack of new manpower.

To run an organic non-profit organization, one that grows and develops, consider the following design.

STEERING COMMITTEE:

The Steering Committee provides vision, purpose and direction.  Meeting only 3-4 times per year, this group sits high up in the clouds and give a broad overview, plus a sense of identity.

What are the projects and programs the group should be involved with?  Who is the group set up to benefit?  What should the group be doing, and WHY?

ORGANIZATION BOARD:

The three primary purposes of the Board are 1) overall management of the group including financial and legal solvency, 2) setting standards and expectations for the programs and projects of the group, and 3) finding and developing the people to run the programs and projects.  The board should not run the projects directly.  Their job is to find and develop the people that facilitate the projects, and provide organic growth to the organization.

PROJECT COMMITTEES:

These are the people who run the actual projects.  They handle the roles and processes needed to bring each program to its highest level of success.

It is highly recommended you keep these areas separate.  It is easy to allow a Board member to chair a project, but do not allow that to happen.  The Board member can be a part of the project, but not the Project Chairman.

If you stick to these three distinct but complementary committees, your organization will have a bright present and an even brighter future.

The Steering Committee of Rockton Rejuvenescence is designed to give Vision and Direction to our work. Its members represent city, business and community leadership. We are pleased and honored to have these individuals represent our Foundation and its work.
